Event Description

In 2014, Nadia Murad, a Yazidi woman from northern Iraq, was captured by ISIS after witnessing the destruction of her village and the murders of family and neighbors. Following her escape from ISIS, she has worked tirelessly to publicize ISIS atrocities and advocate for victims of genocide and human trafficking.

In September, 2015, Nadia was named Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. She has been honored with the Council of Europe Vaclav Havel Award for Human Rights, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, and has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2016 she founded Nadia’s Initiative ( a non-profit dedicated to helping women and children victimized by genocide, mass atrocities and human trafficking heal and re-build their lives and communities.
