The Privileged Poor
Join us as Anthony Jack, Assistant Professor of Education at Harvard University and author of The Privileged Poor (Harvard UP, 2020) engages in conversation with Cecilia Rouse, Dean of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and the Katzman-Ernst Professor in Economics and Education. Their conversation will consider the campus lives of lower-income students, the “unwritten rules” or “hidden curriculum” of elite colleges, and the difference between “access” and “inclusion” at elite institutions. Jack will describe how class divides on campus create barriers to academic success—and share what schools can do to level the playing field.
Rouse is a labor economist with a focus on the economics of education, the founding director of the Princeton Education Research Section and a member of the National Academy of Education. She is a senior editor of The Future of Children, a policy journal published by the School and the Brookings Institution, and serves on the editorial board of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy. She also serves on the boards of the Council of Foreign Relations, University of Rhode Island and the National Bureau of Economic Research, and is an independent director of the T. Rowe Price Funds.
